Going Old School

Now that our 3-5th students have been practicing typing training for a whole trimester I decided to really start testing them on their typing skills!  Students are now going to have keyboard covers on their keyboards when they are typing so they can’t “hunt and peck” or look down at their keys.  At first I was going to buy them online but then I remembered what I used to use when I was in school and decided to go old school with some homemade covers.  Luckily, paper box lids are the perfect size for a keyboard!  Check out my homemade covers below.Keyboard Cover

Selfie Checks

How is your day going?  That is something that students can self-assess by using a Google Form to create a Selfie Check!  We have a few students at Irving who created selfie checks with their teachers.  The purpose of the selfie check is to have students take ownership for their learning and behavior while also allowing the teacher to collect information on the student.  Selfie CheckHere is an example of a selfie check that helps the student self-assess how they are doing in class in regards to learning.  The students enjoy getting to use a Google Form and love that it has the word “selfie” in it.  Teachers love that it gives them authentic data on their students.

Kindergarten Counting

Kindergarteners in Ms. Gullo’s class have been working on counting objects and then writing the number the correct way.  To have the students show what they know they created videos using Educreations.  Using the app, students found pictures of Fall and then counted while circling their pictures.  Finally, the students wrote their number.  Some of the videos are posted below (the rest of the class will be posted next week when they finish).

Student Spotlight: :Maxie

Throughout the year I will highlight exceptional student work on my blog and also share it out on Twitter.  Our first student spotlight is a fifth grader named Maxie.  She created a Powerpoint presentation on time travel.  She did a great job of creating a professional looking presentation that uses transitions, pictures and text to do an amazing job explaining about time travel!

QR Codes

I have had a lot of teachers so far this year using QR codes more and more. QR codes are a great way to share more information with students in a quick and easy manner.  Here are a few examples of teachers that have used QR codes so far!

Mrs. Collins in 2nd grade  and Mrs. Grogan in Kindergarten are using QR codes to give students easy access to read aloud books during station time.

Our Spanish teachers, Ms. Szaragoza and Ms. Nieto, are using QR codes to give students a chance to learn more about famous Latinos.

2nd Graders Use Explain Everything

Second graders got their first taste of how AMAZING Explain Everything is!  With this being their first time using Explain Everything we kept it simple and just had the students take a picture of their already completed worksheet and then explain the worksheet using their voice and a tracking dot.  The students did a GREAT job with the app and I was amazed at how easily they figured it all out.  I am really looking forward to getting into more complex projects with them and showing them what Explain Everything can really do!  Take a look below at an example from one of the students!
